Holders Rockwell showed ruthless efficiency against Bandon Grammar in their opening Munster Schools Senior Cup clash at Clanwilliam yesterday .
Four unanswered tries were a worthy product of the effort and ability shown by the Co Tipperary college and they will again be a force to be feared.
While it may have taken them longer than their junior counterparts to get off the scoring mark, once they did the result rarely looked in doubt and by the final whistle the Bandon support had been largely silenced.
Led by a powerful display in the pack by captain Diarmuid Barron, prop James Kendrick and flankers Mikey Wilson and Ben Murray, Rockwell’s superior ball-winning and carrying in that department gave the backs a fine foundation.
After Paudie Feehan landed a penalty in the 15th minute, Paudie Leamy finished off an impressive right-left movement with a try after taking a nice pass from Jamie Stone. On the opposite wing, Brian Fitzpatrick made it 13-0 when he scored an excellent try after a well-delivered scrum sent Mike Casey, Josh Pickering and finally Paudie Feehan on the move.
A couple of yellow cards early in the second-half didn’t help Bandon’s cause, with Greg Reidy and Dylan O’Callaghan both hitting the sin-bin, and Mike Casey was able to capitalise on Rockwell’s numerical superiority when he made for the line after a quick break for their third try.
The same man closed the scoring in the 70th minute after an impressive, length-of-the-pitch break by Conor Cashman and Chris Egan, to complete the job for Rockwell and send them into the quarter-finals.
Bandon came up against a very good team in this first round but could well cause problems for other sides before the competition is out with full-back Sean Hudson a threat throughout.
- The draw for the losers’ round of the senior and junior schools’ cup competition was made at the end of play yesterday.
In the Munster Senior Cup, St Clement’s got a bye straight into the quarter-finals, while Bandon are at home to St Munchin’s and Crescent are home to Glenstal Abbey in the knockout round.
Both matches are due to take place next week and the draw for the quarter-finals will be made afterwards.
Christians Brothers College received a bye into the quarter-finals of the junior cup while, in the knockout round, Bandon will play at home to Castletroy and St Clement’s are at home to Ardscoil Rís.
