Clonmel take first Munster Junior League title

Clonmel were crowned Munster Junior League champions for the first time as Junior Clubs again dominated in the Munster Junior Cup.

There were great scenes of joy at Clonmel, when the home side were crowned Division 1 champions after their 34-7 win over Cobh Pirates.

Two tries from Luke Hogan and one by Morgan Lyons with two conversions by Conor Cooney gave Clonmel a 19-0 half time lead. Tries from Neville Melbourne, Darragh Foley and Billy O’Kelly extended their advantage before Greg Higgins replied with a try and conversion for Cobh.

Old Christians maintained their status as a First Division side with a 23-17 win at Skibbereen. Each side were awarded a penalty try in the opening half but a conversion and two penalties by Sean Meaney gave Christians a 13-10 interval lead. Niall McCarthy and Darragh Daly added further tries for the visitors while Michael Limerick replied with a try for Skibbereen and Ger Hurley converted both and also kicked a penalty.

Galbally defeated Waterpark 29-7, a result that still leaves the Suirsiders in danger of being relegated.

In Division Two Clanwilliam received a walk over from Presentation and that means they will be promoted along with Bandon to the top flight next season.

Mallow moved up to third place after their 24-12 home win over Thurles. Mallow led 10-6 at the break and had tries from Con O’Donovan, John Forrest and Kieran Willis. Micky O’Flynn converted all three and also kicked a penalty.

Waterford City defeated Abbeyfeale 13-5 with a try from Ryan Phillips and a conversion and two penalties by Michael Hayes. Kieran McCarthy was Abbeyfeale’s try scorer.

In the Munster Junior Cup Kilfeacle defeated Garryowen 18-10. The visitors had tries from Diarmuid O’Donnell and Danny Lambe. Ciaran Lowry kicked a drop goal and Darren Lowry added a conversion and a penalty. John Mark Griffin was Garryowen’s try scorer and Fionn McGibney kicked a conversion and a penalty.

In a very tight game at Cashel, St. Mary’s defeated the home side 13-6. A try by Barry Kelly gave Mary’s a 5-3 interval lead. Ollie McGlinchey kicked a penalty for the home side. McGlinchey and Sean Lyons exchanged penalties before Matthew Hickey scored a late try to make sure of victory for the Saints.

Clonakilty defeated Kinsale 38-24 in a game that produced ten tries. Courtney Canning (2), Cian Clancy, Eoin O’Neill, Batt Duggan and Aidan Foley were Clon’s try scorers and Joe Lee kicked four conversions. Kinsale replied with two tries from Pat O’Regan and one each from Tom McCarthy and Andrew Kelly. Barry McGrory kicked two conversions.

St. Senan’s defeated Kanturk 15-5 but did not have things all their own way. Aidan McMahon and Ian Fitzgerald were try scorers for Senan’s and Declan Rowe kicked a conversion and a penalty. Tadgh McSweeney replied with a try for Kanturk.

Cork Constitution defeated Youghal 22-8 in the Munster Junior Plate while

Ennis defeated Bruff 33-17 in the quarter finals of the Munster Junior Bowl.

Sunday’s Well had a 30-12 home win over Fermoy.
