Indomitable St Munchin’s stage late Junior Cup rally to stun Ardscoil Rís

Ardscoil dominated the opening half and deservedly led 21-13 entering the game’s final minutes. But Munchin’s refused to give up and their self belief was rewarded with a sensational victory. They narrowed the gap when Killian Markham knocked over a fine penalty and stormed at their opponents from the restart. Captain and scrum-half Evan Maher made the crucial break before linking with substitute Tom Harrington who weaved through several tackles to cross the on the left. He then showed admirable composure in running around the posts to make the winning conversion for Markham little more than a formality,

Ardscoil were in charge for much of the first-half and turned over 21-10 in front with tries by Brian Noonan, John Taylor and Darragh O’Gorman, two converted by Maurice Noonan and the third by captain Craig Casey against a try by Evan Maher and penalty and conversion by Markham for St Munchin’s. Ardscoil, who now face an away quarter-final against CBC, lost much of their momentum on the turnover and were held scoreless throughout the second half. Markham cut his side’s arrears with an early penalty but there seemed little likelihood of an upset until Munchin’s staged their late, late rally to claim the spoils.
