Given that Crescent included two-thirds of the side that captured the trophy last season and Christians fielded a youthful team, 12 of whom will be eligible for the competition next season, a victory for the home side was always on the cards.
Crescent laid the foundations up front and the side as a whole played with a fluency that was a joy to behold. There have been few team performances to match this for quite some time.
For Christians, however, it was indeed a black day, but they had reason to be annoyed at a 14-6 penalty count against them.
“We got off to a great start with a few early tries and built our momentum from there and were clinical enough to put away the scores,” said Crescent head coach Conan Doyle. “Now we have to work at keeping our feet on the ground as there has been a huge sense of expectation after all we achieved last year and have 10 of that side still available.
Crescent jumped into a 12-0 lead after nine minutes with superbly taken tries by Robbie Scott and Cormac Blake, one converted by Fionn McGibney.
It was 17-0 in as many minutes when Scott romped over for his second try before Christians enjoyed their best spell and were unfortunate to see flanker Donal Lynch actually cross the Crescent line only to be held up and pushed back.
Crescent’s supremacy was even more marked on the turnover and a McGibney penalty was followed by tries from Will Leonard, Jason O’Halloran and Johnny Keane, two of which were converted by McGibney and Dylan Sheahan.
