Munster do the improbable in securing B&I slot

MUNSTER took the last qualification spot in the British and Irish Cup courtesy of Leinster yesterday.

The men in red secured a bonus-point win over Moseley on Saturday but needed Leinster to stop London Welsh from picking up a bonus point and hope Bedford didn’t claim a victory.

The miracle was completed when Leinster drew 24-24 in Dublin and Bedford were held 25-25 by Llanelli.

Munster led 10-0 at the break thanks to a Dave Kilcoyne try, converted by Scott Deasy who also added the opening score with a penalty after 16 minutes.

The second half scores came from Christy Condon and Paddy Butler, Deasy kicking both, before replacement Peter Borlase added a late try to secure the crucial bonus point victory.

Ulster Ravens, Nottingham, Leinster A, Munster A, Pontypridd, Llanelli, Cross Keys and Cornish Pirates make up the last eight.

MUNSTER: S Scanlon, L O’Dea, JJ Hanrahan, W Chambers, T Gleeson, S Deasy, D Williams; D Kilcoyne, S Henry, C Condon, D Foley, I Nagle, B Holland (capt), D O’Callaghan, P Butler.

Replacements: D Casey, P Borlase, S Buckley, B O’Hara, C Sheridan, D Cusack, R O’Mahony.
