Schmidt’s men maintain momentum

Leinster 38 Glasgow Warriors 3

Glasgow might have had the same intent to attack but they couldn’t back it up with either quality or possession as Leinster pulled away with some brilliant play.

Coach Joe Schmidt admitted it took time for his side to find their feet but said he was delighted with the second-half performance. He knows full well that he has to find a balance in selection in the build up to the Heineken Cup final a fortnight from today but insisted that Ulster would be given the respect they deserve next week.

“That will be a really difficult game for us from every perspective. They are a tough side and they’re smarting from a couple of losses they’ve had to us, so there is always a risk of complacency and we will have to guard against that because they’re too good a side to give any sort of latitude to.”

Fergus McFadden kicked two penalties to cancel out Duncan Weir’s opener for the visitors as the sides went in 6-3 at the break.

Leinster edged closer to that home semi-final with a 46th-minute penalty from McFadden and with the sin-binning of Peter Murchie five minutes later. Shane Horgan then scored in the corner after collecting out-half Ian Madigan’s chip forward.

With only 14 players on the pitch, Glasgow struggled to cope with the growing intensity of Leinster’s attacks, and Gordon D’Arcy was on hand to take a lovely pass from skipper Jamie Heaslip and charge over, giving McFadden a comfortable kick for the extras.

Some of their best football was reserved for the latter stages, with Rob Kearney setting up Dominic Ryan for number three, which McFadden converted. Leinster deservedly got their fourth try and bonus point through Kevin McLaughlin, while McFadden pushed the lead out to 38-3 with his conversion.
