They lost the battle on the night after Leigh Halfpenny’s injury-time penalty clinched a 13-12 victory for Cardiff Blues as the gloom of the Biarritz defeat hung over Munster like a volcanic ash cloud.

But they ultimately won the war in a dramatic climax to the league season as the losing bonus point proved enough to progress to the inaugural play-offs – thanks also in part to a remarkable win by Leinster against Edinburgh.
