TONY McGAHAN, the Munster coach, fully appreciated that he was taking a chance when he sent an untried and inexperienced side into Magners League battle against Connacht at the Sportsground yesterday.

But his blend of young and not so young responded magnificently to the challenge and left the Aussie glowing with praise for their efforts.

“This result puts us in a good position with the Ospreys coming this week and the A team in the semi-final of the British & Irish Cup so it’s another big week for us,” he noted. “I thought our debutants were excellent. They took their opportunity and fought very well and were led around the front by Peter Stringer, Mick O’Driscoll and Paul Warwick and I thought James Coughlan again was excellent.”
