Flutey poised to sign for Munster
L’Equipe claimed yesterday that 30-year-old Flutey, who has been plying his trade in the French Top 14 with Brive, is about to ink a two-year contract with Tony McGahan’s side.
If confirmed, the signing would represent a massive coup for Munster, following the news that Springbok star Jean de Villiers is to leave the province at the end of the season.
Flutey has made only four appearances for Brive this season due to a knee injury. Now back at full fitness, New Zealand-born Flutey was part of the England midfield that beat Italy last weekend and he is expected to line out against Ireland at Twickenham on Saturday.
The departure of the former Wasps, London Irish and Hurricanes player comes hot on the heels of the decision by another of Brive’s English contingent, Andy Goode, to move to the South African side Natal Sharks.
The French club has found itself under huge pressure to cut its wage bill for the forthcoming season after millionaire industrialist Daniel Derichebourg sold the club last September. Despite a host of foreign stars and one of the biggest player budgets in France, it’s been a hugely disappointing season for Brive, who were knocked out of the Heineken Cup before Christmas and lie eighth in the Top 14.
