All-Blacks Isa dream still for Nacewa
The 25-year old has signed a two-year deal and will arrive later this year with the conclusion of his contractual obligations in New Zealand.
Born in New Zealand, Nacewa first gained provincial selection as a 20 year-old. He made his Blues debut in 2005 against the Highlanders and has since appeared 40 times in Super 14 with the north island side. Nacewa made his test debut for Fiji with a two-minute appearance against Scotland in 2003 and has since been trying to have that cap nullified by the IRB in order to represent the All Blacks.
His move to Ireland would suggest that the world governing body is not about to change its mind but the player himself is not giving up on his international ambitions quite yet.
“I really enjoy playing for the Blues and Auckland but am very aware I have to make the most of my playing career while I can. All of us in this game know it is for a finite time-period so it really comes down to making smart decisions short and long-term.
“Having a shot at the All Blacks was and will continue to be my long-term goal. But the reality is that’s not an option for me right now, so I have to get on with my career.”
Michael Cheika, who is also closing in on the signature of Springboks prop CJ van der Linde, will hope that Nacewa’s arrival can go some way to help reignite the back line.
“Isa is a top class attacking player whose versatility as either a midfield or back three player makes him a threat as an out and out try scorer, as well as a playmaker in his own right. He will also increase our kicking options.”
