Munster fans splash out €6.25m on tickets
Fans have snapped up the first batch of 1,250 10-year tickets, splashing out a €6.25m. Each ticket cost €5,000.
In all 4,000 10-year tickets will be offered over the coming 12 months, with the potential to raise €20m.
Ken Lyons, who is one of the four-member Thomond Park Development committee, said: “The tickets went just like that. We will put more on sale as the project progresses.”
And he confirmed the planning application will be lodged with Limerick City Council within two weeks.
Mr Lyons, president of the IRFU Munster branch said: “We hope that the builders will be able to go on site in January.”
He said, all going well, the venue with two new stands and a 26,000 capacity will be ready by October 2007.
He said the ticket sale raised enough money to pay off residents of Knockalisheen Road where the IRFU had to buy 16 houses for a figure believed to be about €4m.
Mr Lyons said: “The 10-year tickets are premium stand tickets located between both 22m lines. Ten-year tickets give the holders access to three Heineken Cup games and four Celtic League games each season and the holder has options to purchase tickets for all other Munster games at Thomond Park and quarter final games at Lansdowne Road.”
The two new stands will seat 15,500 of the total 26,000 capacity.
Mr Lyons and other members of the Thomond Park development committee met with the Mayor of Limerick and members of the City Council yesterday to brief them on the latest developments.
After the meeting, Mayor of Limerick Joe Leddin said: “I am sure the unique atmosphere experienced by all visitors to Thomond Park will continue. The redevelopment is another significant boost to Limerick City, not alone from a sporting perspective but also from an economic impact.”
