Carney on the move

Wigan and Great Britain winger Brian Carney will join new Australian club Gold Coast in 2007.

The 28-year-old Irishman will serve the remaining season of his Warriors contract before moving to Australia.

Gold Coast’s application to join Australia’s National Rugby League was accepted recently and the club will join the league the year after next.

Carney is their third big-name signing after St George Illawarra’s Luke Bailey and Penrith’s Preston Campbell.

Gold Coast managing director Michael Searle said: “Brian was always going to be a key signing for us because he’s a Great Britain international and regarded by most as the best winger in the game.”
