SARFU fined for fielding ineligible player

Zimbabwe’s Tonderai Chavanga was ineligible to play for South Africa in the International Rugby Board’s (IRB) Sevens tournaments in Dubai and George, South Africa, an independent judicial officer has found.

Following an investigation and hearing into the eligibility of Chavanga, the South African RFU has been fined £100,000.

The SARFU may take part in the final two legs of the Sevens Series in Bordeaux and London but has to forfeit their 32 points from the Dubai and George tournaments.

The IRB has been told the SARFU intends to appeal the decision.
