Last chance saloon for Lomu in Waikato

JONAH LOMU has just one game left to force his way into the All Black World Cup squad after being ruled out of Wellington’s NPC opener against Southland over the weekend.

Last chance saloon for Lomu in Waikato

Lomu was omitted on Thursday after failing to train on Tuesday or Wednesday because of tight leg muscles.

All Black doctor John Mayhew said there was nothing sinister in the decision, saying Lomu’s kidney dialysis treatment continued to go to plan.

Wellington’s medical team made the call to take the giant wing out and his World Cup dream appears just that now. Next week’s game against Waikato will be his last chance to win over the All Black selectors.

Wellington coach John Plumtree and his medical team refused to discuss Lomu’s situation, leaving a frustrated Mayhew to provide some insight and in the process fire a shot at the Wellington setup.

“There is no problem that I am aware of with his dialysis,” Mayhew said.

“It must be some other minor injury that I’m not aware of.”

He added that Lomu had been medically cleared to return to rugby a few weeks ago and there was nothing sinister to this week’s setback.
