Classic heroine Kazzia dies at 14
The first German bred to win a British Group One, Kazzia gave birth to a Dubawi filly which has survived.
Owned by Godolphin and trained by Saeed bin Suroor, the daughter of Zinaad lifted the two Classics in 2002 when she also won the Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park.
Darley stud director Liam O’Rourke said: “Kazzia was a wonderful racehorse, and an excellent mother, with a delightful temperament.
“She’s the kind of mare you dream of – a Guineas and Oaks winner, and the dam of a Group One winner.
“We’ll miss her but are grateful her foal has survived.”
Kazzia won five of her seven starts in four different countries.
Trained initially in her native Germany, Kazzia won on her debut in Berlin and then followed up in Italy’s top juvenile fillies’ race, the Group Three Premio Dormello in Milan, before joining Godolphin, for whom she went on to taste Classic glory.
She was equally successful in the paddocks.
Her first foal was the highly-rated Singspiel horse Eastern Anthem, winner of the Group One Dubai Sheema Classic and now standing at stud himself.
Her second foal, another Singspiel colt, Zeitoper, won the Grade Three Prix de Conde as a juvenile, while her fourth foal, the Monsun filly Kailani, ran in the 2012 Oaks, having won the Listed Pretty Polly Stakes at Newmarket.
As well as her Dubawi filly, Kazzia has a two-year-old colt by New Approach and a yearling filly by Shamardal.
