Having won the Group 1 Vincent O’Brien National Stakes in 2020 and 2022, trainer Joseph O’Brien, who also won the race twice as a jockey, extended the sequence of saddling the winner of the race every other year when Scorthy Champ landed the 2024 renewal in the hands of Dylan Browne McMonagle.
Drawn lowest of all, he remained on the far side throughout and McMonagle delivered him to challenge Seagulls Eleven a furlong out. From there, the chestnut son of Mehmas ran on stoutly to see off the staying-on but wandering odds-on favourite Henri Matisse.
