Eve Johnson Houghton is excited about The Cheka’s bid for handicap glory in the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup.

The gelding, part-owned by comedian Mel Smith, has become more accustomed to Group company and has been placed in the Duke of York Stakes, July Cup and Prix Maurice de Gheest.

Just beaten in a Group Three at Goodwood last time, he will now head for Scotland’s biggest Flat race on Saturday.

“I think he’s got a great chance – so much so that I have invested a whole five pounds on him,” said the Oxfordshire trainer.

“Hopefully it will rain there, it will at least help to slow the others down.”

The Cheka is currently available at 20-1 with the sponsors.
