Frankie Dettori admitted his pride after being made an Honorary Doctor of Science by Anglia Ruskin University.

The 40-year-old was recognised for his services to the racing industry by the Cambridge-based institute.

The university has special facilities for equine research and treatments and the ceremony was at the Guildhall in Cambridge.

“I’m a bit shocked to be among all of these people who have been studying for years as I left school at 14,” said Dettori.

“But I’ve been embraced by the British public and I’m really proud.”

Dettori, who has been crowned champion jockey three times, was also awarded an MBE in December 2000.
