Thomas looking for Epsom threat

Sam Thomas and Epsom Salts are gunning for their second consecutive victory in the Tompkins & May Partnership Jump Jockeys Derby on Thursday.

As many as 11 National Hunt riders will be taking their chance over the Derby trip at Epsom and former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Thomas is looking to repeat his three-quarter length success in 2009 aboard the locally trained and named gelding.

“It’s a very different experience but one we all enjoy,” admitted Thomas.

“Obviously we are going a lot quicker than any jumps race but the competitive element is still very much there and its race we all want to win.

“It’s the same trip as the Derby and its change from what we do every day. Once again I am really looking forward to it.”

The 2010 Gold Cup-winning jockey, Paddy Brennan, will get the leg up on Rosco Flyer.
