Electric Waves takes St Hugh's Stakes at Newbury

Ed McMahon made a second profitable visit to Newbury in less than a month as Electric Waves collected the Listed Bathwick Tyres St Hugh's Stakes.

The Staffordshire trainer and owner John Fretwell celebrated a bumper payday in July when Temple Meads, who runs in the same lime green colours, won the Weatherbys Super Sprint over course and distance.

On the same afternoon as the Super Sprint, this particular chestnut landed a nursery at Haydock and the rain-softened ground saw her in an even better light here.

Electric Waves and Richard Mullen put the event to bed at the one-furlong pole and she was good value for her length-and-a-quarter superiority over Sweet Cecily.

Hooray, the 6-5 favourite, was a big disappointment back in sixth.

McMahon said of the 10-1 chance: "I think the ground has helped her a little.

"Off a mark of 88, on paper you'd think she'd have run well if she was third or fourth, but she's a filly that hasn't stopped improving.

"It was a bit of a shot in the dark but we've taken our chance and it's paid off.

"I should think there might be some offers for her after this, so we'll have to wait and see."

Most of the two-year-old fillies engaged in the St Hugh's Stakes were sprint-bred and mainly on the small side, but there were several longer-term projects in action on a drizzly afternoon.

Nothing stood out more than Saamidd, who is surely another exciting candidate for Godolphin.

From the family of Barathea and Gossamer, Saamidd was sent off at 11-4 in what looked a decent field for division one of the Don Deadman Memorial EBF Maiden Stakes, but he showed a devastating turn of foot following a little squeeze from Frankie Dettori and ended up winning by seven lengths.

Totesport and Sky Bet were impressed enough to introduce the colt at 20-1 for next year's 2000 Guineas.

"He came here with a big reputation and he didn't let me down," said Dettori.

"He gave me a good feel. I don't know what he beat but he did it in style."

Division two went to another choicely-bred newcomer, the John Gosden-trained Treasury Devil (9-4).

The son of Crystal Music has already been given some high-profile entries and will have done little to dissuade connections after William Buick surged to the front with a couple of furlongs to run.

The 5-4 favourite General Synod got going all too late and eventually finished three-quarters of a length adrift.

Treasury Devil's owner and breeder Lady Lloyd Webber said: "We tried to sell him at Saratoga but we valued him very highly because of his pedigree.

"William said he had to go to the front at that time as the horse had all the gears and did everything right."

Buick and Gosden later combined for a double in the extended mile-and-five-furlong Punter Southall Transaction Services Handicap through the steadily-improving Kansai Spirit (5-1).

The Ruthy Smith Memorial Maiden Fillies' Stakes, for three-year-olds, saw 6-4 favourite Dark Promise nearly justify her skinny odds, but she was caught close home by Jim Crowley and Red Intrigue (9-2).

Desert Poppy (2-1 favourite) took in her stride the step up to six furlongs in the MC Seafoods Handicap.

She was continuing the good run of trainer Walter Swinburn, who said: "She is dipped-backed and quite difficult to settle but that was great.

"Hopefully there are a few more options in the autumn."

Eight-year-old Foxhaven, also ridden by Crowley, is no longer the force he was but Patrick Chamings' 11-8 favourite was good enough for the Christopher Smith Associates Claiming Stakes.

Gross Prophet (8-1) cashed in under Sophie Doyle in the Bettor Racing Tips At bettor.com Apprentice Handicap.
