Ice-cool Martini shows spirit

Ladies' Day on the Knavesmire got off to a topical start as Midnight Martini, the only filly in the DBS £300,000 St Leger Yearling Stakes, landed the opening heat at York.

Tim Easterby's filly had won her last two starts but was nevertheless sent off a largely unconsidered 18-1 chance.

David Allan had his mount prominent throughout and just held off the late challenge of Carnaby Street (50-1) by a neck, with Sole Power the same distance away in third.

Favourite Rodrigo De Torres was beaten when Neil Callan was unseated just before the line - but no damage was done.
