Jury lays down the law at Haydock

Jukebox Jury opened his account for the campaign with a brave victory in the totepool Rose of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock today.

Mark Johnston's grey, a Group Two winner as a juvenile, was sent off a 6-1 shot, having finished a creditable sixth behind the likes of Sea The Stars, Rip Van Winkle and Conduit in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown.

After travelling close to the pace, Royston Ffrench had to get to work at the top of the straight, but his mount kept responding to his urgings.

Frankie Dettori struck the front over two furlongs from home on 9-4 favourite Campanologist but Jukebox Jury, in receipt of 9lb from his elders, gradually wore him down to score by a length and a quarter.

Ffrench said: "He was under a pressure for a long way but he's a very talented horse and he kept on finding. Thankfully we got there just in time.

"He ran a great race in the Eclipse and, dropping back to Group Three company, he has shown he is good enough."

Dettori said of the runner-up: "Campanologist ran a sound race but was beaten by a better horse on the day.

"The winner was a three-year-old, and getting a lot of weight, but my horse didn't go down without a fight and is a nice horse."

The Italian rider was out of luck in the feature event, but gained some compensation as Libel Law repelled all-comers to win the totescoop6 Stakes.

Dettori sent the Michael Jarvis inmate to the front halfway up the home straight, and soon had his rivals in trouble.

A number of horses came out of the pack to challenge, including 5-2 favourite Dancourt, but Jarvis' 6-1 shot dug deep inside the final furlong and was two and a quarter lengths ahead of the fast-finishing Nanton.

Dettori said: "He didn't really want to go to the start and he started to sweat badly.

"In the race he pulled really hard for four furlongs but, when he got to the front, he put his head down and won."
