Hanagan to make swift return

Paul Hanagan plans to be back in action at Newcastle tomorrow after damaging his right hand at Carlisle on Monday night.

Richard Fahey’s stable jockey missed his mounts at Catterick today to get the injury checked out.

With X-rays revealing no broken bones, he aims to make a quick return at the Gosforth Park track where he has six rides.

Hanagan, who has had 81 winners so far this season, sustained bruising and swelling to his hand when Drumadoon Bay reared up in the gates catching the jockey in the next stall.

Despite the injury Hanagan managed to steer the Keith Reveley-trained Shekan Star into second place behind Golden Future in the Champagne Lanson Handicap, although he did give up his ride in the one remaining race.

“He should be fit to ride again tomorrow,” said Hanagan’s agent Richard Hale.

“The horse reared up in the stalls next to him, came down through on to the next stall and caught his hand and wrist.”
