Clerk of the course Fiona Needham quickly accepted defeat following an early-morning inspection.

She said: “Overnight temperatures again got down to minus-four degrees – we were left with no choice but to abandon the meeting.

“We’ve now had 10 consecutive days of frost, which has got deep into the ground.”
