Bumper hope Shay expected to progress

Thomond O’Mara believes there is more improvement in Tornedo Shay, who put himself in line for the Cheltenham Festival by making a winning debut at Leopardstown

Thomond O’Mara believes there is more improvement in Tornedo Shay, who put himself in line for the Cheltenham Festival by making a winning debut at Leopardstown.

The four-year-old earned quotes varying from 16-1 to 33-1 for the Weatherbys Champion Bumper with a length verdict over the Dermot Weld-trained favourite Elegant Concorde on Sunday.

“He’s not too bad and he’ll definitely improve from that,” said the Co Tipperary trainer.

“If I don’t have to run him again before Cheltenham I won’t, but if he gets too big I will. Hopefully natural improvement will bring him on a good bit.”

The Dr Fong gelding came to O’Mara in the summer, but it was only recently that he began to show his true ability.

“He was sent to me in August last year and just before Christmas he started to show us something,” he added.
