July mission for Artist

War Artist is likely to go for the Darley July Cup after finishing second to Kingsgate Native in the Golden Jubilee Stakes.

War Artist is likely to go for the Darley July Cup after finishing second to Kingsgate Native in the Golden Jubilee Stakes.

The five-year-old gelding, winner of two races at the highest level, is reported to be in fine shape following his exertions at Royal Ascot on Saturday.

“He’s come out of the race absolutely fine, touch-wood. He’s had an hour on the walker and had a pick of grass,” said trainer James Eustace.

“He ran a blinder. As for the draw I don’t know if any bias is due to the course or to the surface, but you have to be with the speed.

“I was pleased when we were drawn one and more so when I saw Takeover Target was in three as I knew he’d take us through the race.

“Obviously I would have been delighted if he’d have won, but he ran a great race.

“The July Cup is the obvious one to go for next. If he’s OK, we’ve got to have a go.”

War Artist is generally available at 9-1 for the July Cup at Newmarket on July 11.
