Mick Channon opened his account for the Flat turf season when Barraland gained a decisive success under Joe Fanning in the toteplacepot Handicap at Musselburgh.

Fanning only recently returned to action following several months on the sidelines with a serious back injury and has immediately hit top form.

He had the 5-2 chance smartly away and the bay colt made the rest of the running, sticking to his task well in the closing stages to hold off the well-backed favourite Kinout by a length and a quarter.

Channon was represented by Dave Boulton, who said: “We had five winners on the all-weather in the past month and it is nice to get off the mark on turf with only our second runner. Hopefully it is the first of many.”
