Williams on the mark

Maraafeq hit the target on his British debut in the Showsec Juvenile Novices’ Hurdle at Market Rasen.

Followers of Venetia Williams’ French recruit were given some consternation before flag-fall as the four-year-old sweated up profusely.

It soon emerged a moot point, however, as the 4-1 shot jumped tidily from the outset to record an eight-length verdict from Pheidias in the hands of Sam Thomas.

“It was not the most competitive race but you can’t argue with a win,” said Williams’ assistant, Jerry Roberts.

“It was his first time over hurdles but he’s gone about his job very nicely.”
