Captain leads by example

It is a long way from Middleham to Brighton but Captain Webb appeared none the worse for the journey on a bright autumn afternoon on the South Coast.

It is a long way from Middleham to Brighton but Captain Webb appeared none the worse for the journey on a bright autumn afternoon on the South Coast.

Mark Johnston’s Storming Home colt was the only horse making its debut in the EBF Matthew Clarke Median Auction Maiden Stakes and endeavoured to make all the running.

Captain Webb (13-2) was a little keen early on but always kept something up his sleeve to come in by two lengths from Spectrana.

The 4-6 favourite Doctor Robert failed to land a blow in fourth.

“It may have helped him with the ground being on the soft side but he seemed to know his job well enough and galloped them into the ground,” reported winning rider Jean-Pierre Guillambert.
