Breeze chasing Curragh compensation
Ayr Gold Cup runner-up Benwilt Breeze is set to bid for some quick compensation in Sunday’s Waterford Testimonial Stakes at the Curragh.
The Ger Lyons-trained gelding made his challenge down the centre of the track in last weekend’s cavalry charge and was only headed close home by Kevin Ryan’s Advanced, who hugged the stands rail.
Having been given a clean bill of health after his recent exertions, the five-year-old is now likely to bid for his first Listed win in a race that could also see US Ranger make his debut for Aidan O’Brien.
Lyons said: “He’ll probably take his chance as he came out of the Ayr Gold Cup really well and we’re happy enough with him.
“We nearly won the Stewards’ Cup (with That’s Hot) and then we were beaten a neck in the Ayr Gold Cup so it was almost a remarkable double for the stable.
“If you gave me second when they were at the start, I probably would have taken it in a competitive race like that and I was delighted with the horse.
“We took the low draw as he doesn’t like being crowded and he’s improved a lot this summer.
“He’s a fantastic horse and with the way he’s improving I wouldn’t know where he’ll stop.”
