Former champion two-year-old filly Flashy Wings has been retired after failing to recover from a recurring mucus problem.

The Queen Mary and Lowther Stakes winner of 2005 failed to show her customary sparkle in her work on Mick Channon’s West Ilsley gallops on Tuesday morning.

“She was a very high class filly and it was a dream to have a two-year-old like her,” said Channon.

“She was a very good juvenile who won the Queen Mary and the Lowther, and was one of the best.

“But the soft ground killed her chance of winning the 1000 Guineas and things went wrong from there.

“She had mucus in her lungs last year, and we just couldn’t get rid of it. Work-wise, there have been few who could do what she did, but she was very flat this morning,” he told the Racing Post.
