Dublin horse show set to kick off

One of Ireland’s oldest and largest equestrian events will kick off this week for its annual showcase.

The world renowned 139-year-old Fáilte Ireland Dublin Horse Show begins on Wednesday and runs until Sunday.

Founded in 1868 by the Royal Dublin Society (RDS), it has become a highlight of the summer for equestrian and non-equestrian visitors, each year welcoming thousands of people from Ireland and all over the world.

“The Horse Show is a Dublin tradition,” an RDS spokeswoman said.

“A celebration of Ireland’s affinity with the horse, from the best show horses to the best international show jumpers.

“In 1868 the RDS founded the show, on the lawns of Leinster House, to foster the equestrian industry,” she said.

Some of the show’s highlights include the RDS National Crafts Competition and Student Art Awards Exhibition, Evian Ladies’ Day, international show jumping, pony club games, a kids zone and show hunter ponies.

Speaking in advance of the show, RDS chief executive Michael Duffy said: “This year sees the RDS continue its mission to support the Irish Sport Horse breeder and producer through ensuring the best Irish-bred horses are showcased at the show.

“The show also aims to develop a market for Irish-bred horses, set standards and reward improvements in breeding and performance, as well as promoting international jumping by hosting the event to CSIO Super League standards.”

And for those interested in shopping, there will be 300 trade stands set up offering a vast array of items and memorabilia.
