Bruges to swerve Goodwood

Bruges is set to bypass an outing at Goodwood this week and head straight to the Galileo European Breeders Fund Futurity Stakes.

Trainer David Myerscough had entered his Listed winner for the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes but he will bide his time and wait for the August 25 event at the Curragh instead.

“I would say he would be most likely to go straight to the Futurity, with probably a visit to the racecourse somewhere along the way beforehand,” said Myerscough.

“He’s a horse that you never know exactly how much he has improved until he gets to the racecourse because he’s very laid back at home.

“Hopefully he will run a big race in the Futurity.”

Myerscough, the grandson of legendary handler Vincent O’Brien, is still a relative newcomer to the Irish training scene.

However, Bruges is already a 33-1 chance with the sponsors for the Stan James 2000 Guineas as well as being the same price for the Derby.

“I’m very excited by him. To get a horse like this in my second season is very exciting, particularly as he is a home-bred,” Myerscough told At The Races.

“He showed a brilliant turn of foot to win at Leopardstown.

“He’s by Marju out of a Night Shift mare so there’s plenty of speed there, but obviously he runs in such a way that he switches off completely so you could see him getting further.”
