Step set for Newbury assignment
Regal Step could try to atone for a couple of disappointing efforts in the Newbury St Hugh’s Stakes on August 17.
The Robert Cowell-trained filly was an impressive winner on her debut at Nottingham in June, prompting Highclere Thoroughbred Racing to snap up the daughter of Royal Applause in a private deal.
However, she subsequently disappointed at Royal Ascot and failed to sparkle when fifth in Listed company at Sandown earlier this month.
“She has been a bit disappointing in her two runs since we bought into her, but there have been acceptable excuses on both occasions,” said Harry Herbert, Highclere’s racing manager.
“She was in season at Ascot and we could barely get her back in the box after racing as she really didn’t want to do anything.
“She then beat herself at Sandown last time, running far too freely and soft ground is not her favoured option.
“Ryan Moore commented afterwards that he really liked her and thought she was Listed, if not Pattern class in time and we still rate her highly.”
Although Regal Step has failed to match her Nottingham win, that race has produced four subsequent winners and Herbert is keen to give the filly another chance at Listed level.
“We will head to Newbury next for the St Hugh’s Stakes and hopefully she will show her best there,” he added.
“The form of her first win looks really solid as there has been a rash of winners to come out of the race and we think she is very good.”
