Asset bids to bounce back at Goodwood

Richard Hannon is banking on easier ground at Goodwood next week for Asset to bounce back to winning ways.

The Highclere Thoroughbred Racing-owned four-year-old was backed into 4-1 favourite for this month’s Darley July Cup, where he was sixth behind Sakhee’s Secret.

Hannon believes the good to firm going at Newmarket could have explained his eclipse, and he will return Asset to seven furlongs for Tuesday’s Betfair Cup.

“We have always said he needed good to firm ground but he flattened out at halfway in the July Cup and I think good ground is what he wants,” said Hannon.

“We were either going to run in this or the Maurice de Gheest at Deauville but we decided to make the entry. I think he’ll get the seven furlongs and the track will suit. We should get lively ground.”
