Cunning Fox stuns Ayr
Mick Mullineaux's Danzig Fox ran out a shock 50-1 winner of the Slater Menswear Median Auction Maiden Stakes at sun-baked Ayr today.
Richard Mullen's mount had several lengths to make up approaching the final furlong.
But he got his head in front inside the final furlong and stretched out well to score by a length and three-quarters from 11-4 favourite Rub Of The Relic.
Long-priced winners are no stranger to Mullineaux at Ayr. Wizard of Us won at the course for him at 100-1 and 33-1 shot Lady Boxer landed the Ayr Silver Cup in 2000.
The Cheshire-based handler said: "The win is no surprise to me, he is the only two-year-old I have but he has been working well with older horses and he is a such a laid-back horse.
"He takes everything in his stride and I will give him some time off now."
Simon Whitworth was suspended for one day (July 19) for careless riding on Rub Of The Relic in the opener.
Punters had better fortune 30 minutes when Exit Strategy, backed from 8-1 to 5-1 favourite, ran out an easy winner of the Race For Life Handicap.
Paul Mulrennan had the three-year-old handily placed and travelling well from the outset.
Once he asked him for his effort approaching two furlongs out, the William Haggas-trained gelding quickened to lead and prevailed by five lengths from Mangano.
Haggas was represented by his wife, Maureen, who said: "We have been running him over the wrong trip and he has done it well.
"He is in the Sales this week but I don't know if we will hang onto him now, that will be for the boss to decide."
