Maggie May go to Goodwood

Chris Wall blamed the “gluey” ground for Wake Up Maggie’s below-par performance at Leopardstown on Wednesday night.

The four-year-old was odds-on for the Group Three Brownstown Stakes over seven furlongs yet could only finish fourth behind Irish-trained winner Redstone Dancer, beaten six lengths.

“She seems fine this morning. It was just the ground, it was really sticky there last night,” said Wall.

“I’ve watched the re-run and she was never really able to get her action going. She was scratching along, unable to flow.

“I thought it would be a bit sloppier than it was if it kept raining, but it was quite gluey.”

Wall hopes the ground will be more suitable for Wage Up Maggie’s next intended target, the Oak Tree Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

“The next obvious one to go for is the fillies’ race, the Oak Tree Stakes, at Goodwood. That will probably be the next one on our agenda,” added the Newmarket trainer.

“There are a couple of races in France at around the same time, but I would think the objective would be Goodwood.

“If it was very soft we might have to reign our plans, but that’s where we go at the minute.”
