Irish Olympian critically injured in English car crash

An Irish sports star and Olympic competitor has been critically injured in a car crash in England, it was revealed today.

Thirty-two-year-old Edmond Gibney, from Kells in Co Meath, suffered severe head injuries in a collision on a narrow bridge in the south of the country on Saturday night.

He is currently in the intensive care unit at Southampton Hospital in Hampshire.

Mr Gibney was a member of the 2004 Irish equestrian squad which competed in the Athens Olympics.
