Dempsey will aim to go one better than last season in the Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot on Saturday week.

He went down by two lengths under top weight to Tysou when the race was run at Sandown and when Mark Pitman held the reins at Weathercock House.

With Carl Llewellyn now in charge at the Hungerford yard and the race back at its traditional Berkshire home, Dempsey has the chance to redeem his reputation.

Little has gone right for Dempsey since the 2006 Victor Chandler as the nine-year-old failed to complete in three of his four starts – and then he was a distant fourth to Racing Demon at Huntingdon.

“He is on course for the race. He worked this morning it went well so we’re hoping to go to Ascot,” said Llewellyn.

Dempsey currently has 11st to carry – although the weights are set to rise - and is a 12-1 chance with the sponsors.
