Baze takes Pincay record

Jockey Russell Baze overtook Laffit Pincay Jr as the all-time leading rider as he steered Butterfly Belle to success at Bay Meadows racecourse on Friday.

Baze was riding his 9,531st winner as he rallied his mount in the fourth race at the California track.

The 48-year-old, who rode his first winner in 1974, equalled Pincay’s near seven-year-old record on Thursday before landing his crucial win.

“Who would’ve thought 32 years ago a skinny little kid with no experience would be standing here today,” Baze told www.bloodhorse.com.

“I could hardly believe this would happen.”

Baze now tops the list of riders with the most wins, with Pincay second on 9,530 while Bill Shoemaker is third on 8,833.
