Placings reserved at Newcastle
There was drama at the conclusion of the Plumbing Trade Supplies Rating Related Maiden Stakes at Newcastle this afternoon.
The Mark Tompkins-trained Summer Lodge was first past the post under Saleem Golam, beating Rae Guest’s Teide Lady, partnered by Francis Ferris, by a neck.
However, the stewards ruled there had been interference between the pair throughout the final furlong, and that it was sufficient enough to have enabled Summer Lodge to improve his position.
After an inquiry the stewards reversed the placings and also handed Golam a three-day suspension for careless riding.
“We felt there were two incidents inside the final furlong and that the interference caused was enough to enable Golam to improve his position,” stipendiary steward Adrian Sharpe told At The Races.
Daniel Robinson, son of top rider Philip, began his career by partnering the Bryan Smart-trained English City to fourth place in the KPMG Apprentice Handicap on the same card.
The 16-year-old was content to settle his mount towards the rear of the field through the early stages and made ground on the wide outside as the leaders entered the final three furlongs.
Having briefly threatened to lay down a challenge to 8-1 winner Moonlight Fantasy, the colt’s run petered out close home and he was passed by Knight Valiant and Dubai Around, who took second and third respectively.
