Dettori keen on Camillo

Frankie Dettori believes Sander Camillo can develop into a leading contender for next year’s Stan James 1000 Guineas.

The Italian partnered Jeremy Noseda’s filly to an impressive five-length success in the Chippenham Lodge Stud Cherry Hinton Stakes at Newmarket and he is sure she will be a Classic contender in time.

Dettori said: “She’s a wonderful filly and did something in quickening twice that not many horses are able to do. I would have to say that at this stage of her career, she would be the best filly I’ve ever ridden.

“Jeremy has always thought a lot of her. Without doubt she’ll get further and she will be a lovely Guineas filly for next year.”

Noseda was equally bullish, adding: “Sander Camillo is a very professional filly and gave me the feeling she had moved on since her Ascot win. She has a lot of class and speed.

“You sit there and feel you have one that is extra special. As soon as I started working her I told Sir Robert Ogden’s racing manager, Barry Simpson, that this filly was in a different league to La Chunga who also won the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot.”

Noseda and Dettori went to complete a 3.1-1 double when 8-11 shot Kalgoorle came out best in a three-way photo for the Strutt & Parker EBF Maiden Stakes.

“I’m a little bit disappointed he’s made hard work of it but all being well we’ll have a crack at the Champagne Stakes at Goodwood as long as the ground is fast there,” added the Shalfleet handler.

Smart Enough (9-2) got favourite backers off to a perfect start by notching a length-and-three-quarter success over Plum Pudding the Racing Post Bloodstock Handicap.

Trainer Mikael Magnusson said: “I think Smart Enough was beaten by greenness at Royal Ascot rather than a lack of ability and when they are in two groups - as was the case today – you are always in the hands of the Gods to a certain extent.

“I shall try to find a spot for him at Goodwood. There’s a race over a mile and one over a mile and a quarter but for me, I firmly believe he will be at his best over the longer distance.”

The totesport.com Stakes turned into a handicappers’ dream as Dark Missile came out on top in a thrilling four-horse finish.

A photograph showed that 16-1 shot Dark Missile and Martin Dwyer had prevailed by a head from Mutamarres with Prince Tamino a short head behind in third and Ripples Maid the same margin away in fourth.

Michael Stoute was on the mark when Heaven Sent landed the EBF Racing Post Fillies Handicap by a length-and-a-quarter and a neck from Jeanmaire and Blades Girl.

Ryan Moore was at his strongest on the 6-1 winner whose trainer said: “I was very pleased with that. We can campaign her over seven furlongs or eight.

“At the moment she is just a handicapper and we will have to see how she progresses.”

Tony Procter turned back the clock when landing the Kleinwort Benson Maiden Stakes on Zaif (14-1).

Procter had partnered his last winner on the Flat in Britain nine years ago on Bookcase, a half brother to today’s winner.

David Elsworth said: “I’m glad to see Tony back with me after a period in exile. He had a winner for us over hurdles the other day and I know this will have given him great pleasure as he used to ride Bookcase who won 11 races for me.”
