The runners for the opening betfair.com Novices’ Hurdle had already been brought into the paddock when black smoke and flames began to emanate from the unit.

Spectators began to leave the stands because of the smoke, while the horses returned to the stables.

The fire brigade were called to deal with the incident and arrived at the track at around 2.10pm, the scheduled start time of the first race.

Two loud explosions were heard as the firefighters arrived.
