Morrison in no rush with Tamino
Hughie Morrison is to take the “softly softly” approach with Prince Tamino following his victory in the William Hill Trophy.
The three-year-old was running for the third time in 16 days and enjoying success for the second time in a week when taking the valuable six-furlong handicap at York.
“If he goes up 8lb to 10lb to 100 and that is Listed class so you are really out of handicap company immediately,” Morrison told Racing UK.
“The difficulty for three-year-olds is they get very little weight advantage from older horses and so you have to be a real cut above and that’s why you have to take them quietly and carefully if they are sprinters.
“If younger horses go into Group races at three straightaway they just can’t cope.”
Morrison is hoping Prince Tamino will be good enough to be considered next year for the Darley July Cup, which he won with Pastoral Pursuits last season.
“I’d like to think maybe next year go for the July Cup with him. He’s not entered (this year) and I expect it will come a bit quick for him. He’s had three quick races and it takes it out of them,” the East Ilsley trainer added.
The in-form Morrison is looking forward to Royal Ascot.
“We’ve got a few in the handicaps. There’s Intrepid Jack in the Wokingham, Baltic King runs on Tuesday (in the King’s Stand) and if he also runs in the Wokingham he could go well in that too.
“We have Supaseus in the Britannia and Michabo in the Ascot Stakes. It would be great if they finished in the money,” he concluded.
