Hamilton to stage Glasgow stakes
Hamilton have stepped in to host the Listed Glasgow Stakes following York’s decision to drop the 10-furlong race last year.
Small fields over the last few seasons prompted York to cut the conditions race from the Dante meeting last May but Hamilton, with the approval of the European Pattern Committee, have now reinstated the contest.
The Glasgow Stakes, won by Commander In Chief in 1993 before he went on to take the Derby, will now be run at the Scottish track’s evening meeting on May 19.
Frankie Dettori and Kieren Fallon have backed the decision and Hamilton’s clerk of the course Hazel Peplinski is looking forward to the event.
She told the Racing Post: “Provided the race attracts sufficient quality, a smallish field doesn’t really perturb us, although, of course, we’ll be working hard to encourage trainers from south of the Border to bring horses by putting on a strong supporting programme.”
Dettori added: “It’s an important stepping stone for Derby horses who, at that stage of the campaign, want to swerve the big guns in the Dante Stakes.”
