Classy Wellbeing primed for return
Wellbeing, a one-time smart Flat performer for Henry Cecil and then Pascal Barry, is set to have his first outing since December 2004 when running over hurdles for Philip Hobbs next week.
Now a nine-year-old, the son of Sadler’s Wells raced in top-class company on the level, beating Sakhee in a Group Three event at Deauville in 2002, and has run once over hurdles when finishing second to Roman Ark 13 months ago.
Hobbs told At The Races: “He runs next week and while he is quite old for a hurdler, he was a very good Flat horse.
“If he produces anything like his ability when he was fifth in the Derby then I am sure he can win plenty of hurdle races.
“He has had carpal tunnel syndrome, which means the tendon which goes round the back of the knee was a bit constricted and that was operated on to try and put it right. He is back in work and all is fine and well.
“He wanted soft ground on the Flat, but when he ran him at Haydock it was heavy and he had probably never been on ground like that before. He wants it soft but not bottomless.”
