Eddery's first runner finishes second

Pat Eddery made an encouraging start to his training career when sending out Perez to fill the runner-up spot at Wolverhampton on Saturday evening.

The 11-time champion jockey’s first runner as a trainer come home an honourable second under Emmett Stack in the First Past The Post At Betdirect Maiden Stakes.

Sent off at 4-1, Perez was always handy under the 5lb claimer but had no answer to Baba Ghanoush’s finishing kick as Willie Jarvis’ charge made all for a two and a half length success.

Perez did finish four lengths ahead of the third-placed Duxford, though, on what was his first start for 453 days.

Eddery, who was granted his licence two months ago, ended his riding career at the end of the 2003 Flat season having ridden 4,633 domestic winners in his 37-year career.
