Injury forces May retirement

Dubai World Cup winner Roses In May has been retired to stud because of a tendon injury.

The five-year-old, trained by Dale Romans, was preparing for his first start since winning the Group One at Nad Al Sheba in March when he sustained the injury in a six-furlong workout at Saratoga.

“It’s been an issue since the only time he ran off the board in the 2003 Jerome Handicap,” owner Ken Ramsey told www.thoroughbredtimes.com.

“He hurt that tendon then and it’s been a maintenance problem ever since. We managed it, spaced his races properly and tried to do the very best we could with it.

"Fortunately, he was able to achieve what he did. The Dubai World Cup is something that will stay with me forever.”

It was announced earlier this season that Roses In May had been sold to undisclosed Japanese interests, and would begin his stallion career in Japan next year. That plan remains on track.

Roses In May, runner-up in last year's Breeders' Cup Classic, won eight of his 13 career starts and earned $5,490,187 (€4,517,000) in prize money.
