McCoy tips Genghis for novice chase switch

Tony McCoy believes Genghis could have a big future ahead of him should he switch to novice chasing in the autumn.

The champion jockey has ridden Peter Bowen’s gelding on his last three starts, winning a Listed event at Aintree before going on to take the Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr.

Genghis went off favourite for the Stanleybet Handicap Hurdle at Haydock on Saturday but could finish only sixth behind Coat Of Honour.

McCoy told At The Races: “He’s gone up a lot in the weights and the ground was a little bit dead, probably more dead than it had been at Aintree.

“He won a Scottish Champion Hurdle and he won a good race at Chepstow as well, so maybe they were taking their toll on him a little bit.

“He’s done well and he would be an exciting chasing prospect. He’s a fairly enthusiastic horse. I know he’s not a great jumper of hurdles, but apparently he schools much better over fences.”
