Hedgehunter, current favourite for the John Smith’s Grand National, has completed his serious preparation for next Saturday’s Aintree showpiece.

Willie Mullins’ Irish raider has attracted steady support in the build-up to the race and is now around an 8-1 shot.

Hedgehunter memorably fell at the last fence in last year’s National when tired but still in contention.

After a number of outings over hurdles this season he returned to fences in February when beating Pizarro in the Bobbyjo Chase.

“He is grand and did his final piece of work yesterday, which seemed to go well,” said Mullins.

The County Carlow handler indicated that he would have a few other runners at the three-day meeting, including Macs Gildoran in the Topham Chase and recent Thurles scorer Lady Accord in the John Smith’s HBLB Mares’ Only Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race.
